Sania eyes cakewalk, not catwalk

KOLKATA, Sep 14: When the women tennis players walk down the ramp at a city hotel on Tuesday, a much sought-after face will be missing. Sania Mirza has said no to the catwalk being organised as a part of the Sunfeast Open, a Tier III WTA meet to be held here from Monday. Sania apparently does not want to project herself as a fashion figure. Rather, she would focus on the game.

"We don't want Sania to walk the ramp at this stage of her career," father Imran confirmed on Wednesday. "We want her to concentrate only on her game." Sania, who will arrive in the city either on Friday or Sunday, will however be in the audience, cheering the Anastasia Myskinas and the Elena Likhovtsevas as they sport a non-sporty look for a change. Sania has already enraged some Muslim clerics, who find her dresses unacceptable. The catwalk is being organised by a designer-wear manufacturer, who would use the presence of the tennis stars to launch a new range.
